Historically analytical tools with proprietary methods often generalize and even oversimplify the reality of the supply chain because they try to optimize from the “Outside-In”. By nature, analytical models accept only the behavior that is assumed by the developers. There is NO way to go beyond the assumptions.

Model transparency, together with interactive animation allows you to observe the dynamics of what is happening in the supply chain when the model is running. With anyLogistix you can check the state of any supply chain element at any moment of simulated time and see how the system interacts with each of the elements. Moreover, you can change supply chain parameters in run-time (for example -amend sourcing policy) to see how the system instantly reacts to the changes. You can trace the consequences of each event and make conclusions based on real dynamics.

If you doubt your supply chain is being represented correctly based on your simulation results, you can always go back to the model to check the animation and statistics while the simulation is running and adjust the parameters. This will allow you to trace the cause of the issue and quickly fix it. This can only be achieved by using simulation modeling.

With most supply chain software tools a simulation model is something you cannot examine – a “black box”. You introduce a few input parameters, press “Enter” and get output data. You can test various input scenarios to see what the consequences might be. Unfortunately, this method does not allow you to trace the dynamics of the supply chain behavior. Therefore, if you doubt the model output is correct, it is virtually impossible to validate that the results produced are accurate. In some cases, you can try to verify the model by solving a problem for which you already know the correct answer – provide the input for which you already know the output. However, if the model produces the right answer it does NOT conclude the results will be correct for a different input! Frankly, you just have to trust the results, or trust the software developer as well as trust the person who built the model.

By changing model parameters, you can see how the changes affect the behavior of the supply chain – for example, how will changing inventory policies influence the bullwhip effect.

With an analytical “simulation”, you know what happens. However, you do not know why it happens. You can try to use “simulation” in traditional tools, but this is a “black box” – you cannot see what is going on inside the model. You can only test various input data configurations to see how the output produced varies depending on the input data. Unfortunately, this is the hardest way to study interdependencies, as you cannot be sure what unique factors led to the result.
